Story Notes

Yoshun stood before the inquisitors. The manacles upon did not burn him and the jade inlaid upon them gave no telltale flash of burning the taint they expected he would have. This frightened them. Learned men such as these were the most noisome with fear when confronted by obstacles beyond their understanding.

They believed themselves strong. They believed that the horrors they had conquered in their duties had steeled their souls against an emotion they felt had been left in the past. And they were unprepared for fear. They no longer recognized their own fear. And that only compounded itself. They were weak. They were unworthy. They would all die today.

Doji Watanabe surveyed the grisly scene before him. The magistrates of the <district> District had not been informed of any activities by the Kuni Witch Hunters. And they certainly had not authorized a cadre of heavily armed Crab to operate within. Yet here they lay. Shattered arms and torn open throats mixing with the foulness spilled from a truly unfortunate disembowelment.

“What is this, Gamou?” Watanabe asked of his trusted eta assistant.

The large man looked up from his work with tears in his eyes. “Doji-sama, forgive me. This is beyond any crime I have ever seen. Words escape.”

Gamou was skilled but hardly brave and took no pleasure in his unfortunate charge. But still his knowledge may be the key to finding the perpetrators of this massacre. “We must not allow this in our home, Gamou. What do you know. You must help me.”

The two yoriki shifted nervously as the examiner gather himself and spoke. “These men my Lord… These wounds were not caused by a blade. See here.” Gamou gestured to a laceration upon the white faced Kimi. “The flesh is not cut it is torn. The same with all of the… damage. And here.”. Gamou visibly shaking pushed a face down corpse partly on to it’s side. “The tear on his neck, the steel here and here should have protected him. But…” All present looked to the wasted bits of metal scattered about. “A man could not have done this my Lord. Forgive me, I fear for our safety here.”

“Alert the Imperials.” Watanabe spoke to his subordinate who immediately bowed and turned to leave. Who could blame him? Only a monster would care to spend any more time here. “Asutaki.” Watanabe spoke to his other attendant. “Send word to the Seppun. This is beyond our scope.”

“Come Gamou, let us leave here” Watanabe placed upon a near table a few coins for the man. “We can do no more now.”
